Quick View
Summary:

The Research Dashboard helps users to make business decisions using research information. As amended, this version requires far fewer effort hours from UTO, and still offers a significant and popular addition, the "Cross-section" chart.

Scope:
Change Month-to-month Data to Fiscal-Year-To-Date Change in 12-Month Total

Required changes to the current dashboard pages:

  1. Change existing "M/M Change in 12 Month Total" column heading to "FYTD Change in 12 Month Total". Make the change in all data grids equal the current month's 12 Month Total minus the last month of the previous fiscal year's 12 Month Total. Make the percentage change equal to the change divide by the last month of the previous fiscal year's 12 Month Total.
CROSS-SECTIONS

Development of a "Cross-Sections" page:

  1. Include an "Activity" DDL. The DDL choices should include:
    Activity DDL contents
  2. Include a "Y Axis" DDL. Under the "Department View" the DDL choices should include:
    Y-Axis DDL choices
Under the "Center View" the DDL choices should include:
    Center View DDL choices
If the user makes any selections in the correspondingly named DDLs, these choices should be removed from the "Y Axis" DDL. For example, if the user selected "Liberal Arts and Sciences" in the "College" DDL under the "Department View" the resulting "Y Axis" DDL choices would be:
    Y-Axis after choice
If the user then selected "Federal" in the "Sponsor Group" DDL, the resulting "Y Axis" DDL choices would be:
    Y-Axis after choice
  3. Include an "X Axes" DDL. The DDL choices should include:
    X-axis DDL choices
  4. Include a dual bar chart display that shows the values selected in the "X Axes" DDL, for the activity selected in the "Activity" DDL across any members of the selection made in the "Y Axis" DDL. The members should be sorted from largest to smallest according to the Totals value, and the ordering and alignment of member values in the Changes graph should be consistent with the Values graph. A scroll bar should be included to allow the user to look at any results that do not fit in the graph display area. The dual bar chart display should also include a Download to Excel button that produces a well formatted Excel file of the data presented across the two graphs. Note: Although the mock-up image below shows several drop-down listboxes for "Sponsor" data, these will NOT be part of this amended project.
    Cross-Section Mockup
Sponsor Groups and Types

Users would like to see the Sponsor Groups and Sponsor Types drop-down listboxes contain the values from a different set of columns in the SPONSOR table. To provide this, the ETL processes for the listbox contents will be changed. (A separate CRM ticket has been created for this item.)

All Milestones and Schedule:

Begin work on prioritized project: (When prioritized and staff allocated) Day 0
Draft data extract for cross-section model: Day 1 (estimated 3 hours; non-interactive data)
Complete mock-up of new chart with accurate data: Day 3 (estimated 20 hours)
Develop Sponsor Group and Sponsor Type changes to drop-down listboxes in "Sponsor View": Day 1 (estimated 10 hours)
Finalize ETL and display changes for M-M --> FYTD% Change in 12-month Totals: Day 2 (estimated 10 hours, 5 for data changes)

Dashboard work

1.Re-align and size the dropdowns at the top so they’re more presentable in a box formation without any outliers.
2.Fix the header of the cross sections graph so it doesn’t scroll.
3.Trim the results of what’s displayed in the graph to the top 100 results. Failure to do this could result in an unpredictable graph display which we’d like to avoid.
4.Make sure the alignment of the bottom scale of the graph works as desired.
5.Shrink the vertical height of the graph’s bars and reduce the size of the text that displays the labels on the right-hand side.
6.Resize the scale of the graph to avoid data labels overlapping text or the boundaries of the graph. Also plan for the possibility of negative numbers on the scale of the graph on the left.
7.Populate the dropdown boxes with the results of Rick’s queries and stored procedures and add the logic that only displays certain values based on prior selections.

Database work

1.Redo the reporting to get the corrected Cross Section options and display results.
2.Add the additional two selection options for the X Axes.
3.Correct the Sponsor Type Descriptions/Groupings.

Complete cross-section interactive procedure, optimize data for speed, finalize parameters: Day 5 (estimated 20 hours)
Release to customer (George Raudenbush, principal, for Research Analytics): Day 7 (after internal review and documentation)

Deliverables:

Creation of new Cross-Section Chart with supporting drop-down listboxes and full interactivity
Modification of month-to-month percent change columns in all pages
Replacement of values in sponsor groups and types
